The Freedom of Information Act 2000 gives you the right to access recorded information held by Sheringham Town Council. This helps ensure the Council is open, transparent and accountable to the public.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- Ask whether we hold certain information
- Receive a copy of that information (subject to some exemptions)
Most types of recorded information are covered, including emails, reports, minutes, photographs and electronic records.
Before you make a request
Many documents are already available on our website or through our Publication Scheme.
We recommend checking these first, as the information you need may already be published.
Making a request
You can request information by contacting us in writing:

Your request should include:
- Your name
- A contact email or postal address
- A clear description of the information you are looking for
How long it takes
We will respond promptly and within 20 working days of receiving your request.
Costs
Most requests are free.
However, we may charge a small fee for printing, postage, or where permitted by law.
When information may not be provided
In some cases, certain exemptions may apply. For example, if:
- the information is exempt under the Act (e.g. personal or confidential information)
- the request is too costly or excessive
- the information is already publicly available
If this happens, we will explain our reasons and the relevant exemptions that apply.
Reviews and complaints
If you are dissatisfied with our response, you have the right to request an internal review. Requests for an internal review should be submitted within 40 working days of the date of the response and should be addressed to townclerk@sheringhamtowncouncil.gov.uk
If, following an internal review, you remain dissatisfied, you may complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Details can be found at www.ico.org.uk
