Overview

Sheringham Town Council is currently progressing work on an important community project that is under active review. We are committed to ensuring that residents have access to accurate, timely and transparent information as the project develops. This page will serve as the central location for updates, background information and any key documents shared throughout the process.

Our current focus

The Council is working hard to put a suitable and sustainable plan in place to support the next steps of the project. Over recent weeks (throughout January 2026), Council representatives have been meeting with the organisations and partners who have a direct role in the work. These discussions have been constructive, and we are pleased to confirm that progress is continuing.

Latest updates

Residents may be aware that Norfolk County Council (NCC) started work on the new Otterndorf Green Travel Hub in October 2025, but in early December, work was stopped after protestors occupied the site, wanting to save the old bus shelter from being demolished.

STC held an Extraordinary Council Meeting to listen to protesters, residents, and gather further views. In that meeting, a motion was put forward that the scheme; as proposed by NCC; is progressed and delivered and that they (STC) support the implementation of the scheme in Full. Councillors voted against this motion. NCC then left the site, which is owned by STC. This meant it became STC’s responsibility to find an alternative solution to finish the site, get the pathway widened and the scheme back on track.

Throughout the process, the aims for the Travel Hub have remained consistent: creating a safer, greener, and more accessible area. Improvements included in the scheme:

  • a modernised, accessible upgrade to the existing brick shelter
  • a wider pavement for improved pedestrian safety
  • real-time passenger information
  • new cycle parking with a repair station and water fountain
  • attractive new seating, signage, and public realm features
  • artwork by local artist, Colin Seal
  • a town history timeline designed by the Sheringham Museum team
  • soft landscaping led by the Sheringham in Bloom volunteers
  • a new shelter and improved footway at the western end of the road

NCC have been clear to us that their continuation of the scheme and the funding obtained can only be achieved if the pavement is widened. At the February Full Council Meeting, STC agreed a positive way forward for the brick shelter. Rather than removing it, Councillors voted to take forward a compromise design that retains and adapts the shelter so that the footpath can still be widened as required. The shelter has now been secured and tenders are being invited so that this work can begin.

Although some aspects of the wider Highways scheme sit with other organisations, STC remains committed to finding practical solutions and are striving to deliver the Travel Hub project as quickly as we can, continuing to work closely and constructively with NCC and all partners involved.

Sheringham Town Council would like to inform residents that the shelter on Otterndorf Green has now been fenced off. This measure is necessary to allow the Council to progress the project without further delay. Additional boarding and signage will be installed shortly to improve the appearance of the site while works continue.

We have a responsibility to ensure that the site remains safe for the public at all times. Recently, we have been made aware of possible attempts to interfere with works taking place on site. We cannot allow any actions of this kind to create additional risk to residents, visitors, or contractors, and the fencing will help us to manage the area securely.

Please be assured that Sheringham Town Council is working hard to achieve a positive outcome for the town. We are doing everything we can to move the project forward quickly, safely, and responsibly.

At the meeting of Full Council on Tuesday 17 February 2026, the following resolution was made:

It was RESOLVED for the Clerk and Mayor to take forward the design to modify the shelter with a sedum roof to enable work to resume to complete the Otterndorf Green Travel Hub, liaising with relevant professionals as required.
